Description

Zinnia elegans 'Purple Prince' is a regal, open-pollinated heirloom developed in the 1930s as a selection from the classic Dahlia Flowered series. Rising 30 to 40 inches tall on long, rigid stems, it produces massive 4- to 5-inch, fully double dahlia-type blossoms in a rich, saturated royal grape-purple with subtle lime-green or golden central centers. Fast-growing and heat-tolerant, Purple Prince blooms continuously from midsummer until the first autumn frost. It is a showstopping choice for dramatic cut-flower arrangements, background garden borders, and attracting butterflies to the garden.

Good to know
  • Saturated, royal purple petals hold their intense depth of color without fading under hot summer sun
  • Exceptional "cut-and-come-again" yield—harvesting main stems encourages dense side-branching and continuous flower production
  • Strong, tall stems easily support the weight of heavy double flower heads in vase arrangements
  • Like most Zinnia elegans varieties, foliage requires good spacing and air circulation to prevent powdery mildew in late summer
  • Sensitive taproots require gentle handling during indoor transplanting to avoid stunting initial growth
