    Description

Curled Leaf Celery (Apium graveolens var. secalinum), historically known as Zwolle Curled (Zwolsche Krul) or Cutting Celery, is a historic open-pollinated European heirloom prized for its intensely aromatic, finely curled foliage. Growing into vigorous, multi-stemmed bushy clumps reaching 12 to 18 inches in height, it produces slender, hollow stems topped with deeply ruffled, parsley-like dark green leaves. Unlike modern thick-stemmed stalk celery, Curled Leaf Celery is cultivated primarily as a continuous "cut-and-come-again" culinary herb. Young leaves offer a crisp, bright accent for fresh salads and garnishes, while mature leaves and stems deliver a potent, rich celery flavor that holds up exceptionally well in cooked soups, stews, stocks, and savory dishes.

    Good to know
    • Far easier to grow and much more forgiving than fussy, moisture-sensitive stalk celery
    • Provides intense, concentrated celery flavor from early spring straight through late fall with continuous cut-and-come-again harvests
    • Compact growth habit makes it an ideal choice for container gardens and small culinary herb setups
    • Stems are thin and hollow rather than thick and fleshy—not grown for raw stalk dipping like standard Pascal celery
    • Seeds are slow and delicate to germinate, requiring 14 to 21 days of steady moisture and surface light
