Description
Eggplant 'Long Purple' (Solanum melongena), an European heirloom cultivated since the 1850s, is celebrated for its attractive slender fruits, tender texture, and high productivity. Growing on bushy, upright plants 24 to 30 inches tall, it produces cylindrical, slightly club-shaped fruits measuring 8 to 10 inches long with glossy, deep purple-black skin. The delicate, creamy white flesh contains few seeds and carries a mild, sweet flavor free of bitter undertones. Excellent for grilling, roasting, slicing into stir-fries, and preparing classic eggplant parmesan, Long Purple matures faster than heavy, bulbous globe varieties, making it ideal for home garden harvests.

Good to know
Slender fruit profile matures earlier than heavy globe types, ensuring reliable yields in northern regions
Mild, sweet creamy flesh contains few seeds, requiring no salting or peeling prior to cooking
Compact branching bush fits neatly into garden beds, raised boxes, large patio containers
High sensitivity to cold air, chilly soil temperatures causing stunted early growth
Heavy fruit loads require short central staking to keep branches upright, off wet garden soil
