Four O'Clock 'Rose' (Mirabilis jalapa), an open-pollinated heirloom native to South America and cultivated since the 16th century, is renowned for its intoxicating evening fragrance and unique blooming cycle. Growing into a bush-like annual 24 to 36 inches tall, it produces trumpet-shaped blossoms in vivid rose-pink hues. True to its name, the fragrant flowers open in late afternoon—around four o'clock—staying open through the night to attract nocturnal pollinators like hawk moths before closing the following morning.
