Description
Squash 'Butternut Waltham' (Cucurbita moschata), an open-pollinated heirloom developed in 1970 by the Waltham Field Station, is the gold standard of winter squashes. Growing on vigorous, sprawling vines 8 to 12 feet long, it produces uniform, bell-shaped fruits weighing 4 to 6 pounds with smooth, tan-to-buff outer skins. The deep orange interior flesh is remarkably smooth, sweet, and nutty, containing a small seed cavity localized in the bulbous base. Exceptionally resistant to vine borers due to its solid stems, Waltham Butternut holds its high quality for months in cold storage, making it perfect for roasting, pureeing into rich autumn soups, baking, and winter pies.
Plant Class:
Warm-Season Annual Fruit / Gourd Family (Cucurbitaceae)
Color:
Smooth creamy tan outer skin, deep orange interior flesh
Plant Characteristics:
Vigorous sprawling vining habit (96–144 inches long / 240–365 cm), uniform bell-shaped fruits (8–10 inches long / 20–25 cm, 4–6 lbs / 1.8–2.7 kg), solid stem resistance to squash vine borer, long storage life
Suitable Space:
Large vegetable garden plots, raised beds with sturdy trellises, sprawling garden edges
Season:
Autumn Harvest (Warm Season, ~100–110 Days to Maturity)
Best Time for Sowing (Zone 6b):
Start seeds indoors late April to early May in peat pots 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting (sow 1 inch deep with bottom heat 21–27°C / 70–80°F). Direct sow outdoors late May to early June once soil temperatures exceed 18°C (65°F), frost risk fully passed. Space plants 36 to 48 inches apart in rows 6 feet apart, or plant 3 seeds per hill spaced 6 feet apart.
Sunlight:
Full Sun (6+ hours direct sunlight daily required)
Watering Needs:
Moderate (requires deep, consistent watering during fruit set; well-drained fertile organic soil, avoiding overhead watering)
